Who Dat News: Goodwin Ready to Step Up

News: With the off-season departure of former starting center, Jeff Faine, to the NFC South rival Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Saints knew they had to resign Faine's backup, Jonathan Goodwin, according to the Times Picayune. Goodwin, who has been in the league 6 years, started his last 2 seasons with the New York Jets but has only played a back up role to Jeff Faine during his tenure in New Orleans. While in New York, Goodwin was mentored by current Saints offensive line coach, Doug Marrone, which made the transition to New Orleans smooth and made it a no-brainer to re-sign with the Saints.

Who Dat Say: While Goodwin has only started 2 games (San Francisco and Jacksonville) for the Saints, he proved he could step and hold his own as he did against Jacksonville's two formidable defensive tackles, Marcus Stroud and John Henderson. Having the same offensive line coach throughout one's entire NFL career is invaluable. At this point, Goodwin should step right in because he already knows the system of Doug Marrone. Although Goodwin will compete with Matt Lehr for the starting job at center, he is expected to replace Faine. With Goodwin there, the Saints shouldn't see any noticeable drop-off.
